Most of the city’s newer, built-from-the-ground-up hotels borrow an ugly tactic from the airlines: they try to cram as many people into as little space as possible. Not the Boro, which debuted in 2017. Here most of the rooms are a capacious (by local standards) 260 square feet and up, that space made even larger-looking by floor-to-ceiling windows, some with views of the Manhattan skyline, some with balconies. Also unusual: the room service menu is affordable, with breakfast coming in at less than $15 in most cases. The hotel is on trend in other ways, however, with its industrial-chic looks, warmed by lots of wood (hardwood floors, barn-like planked walls) and white-duvet-swathed beds. It also has a living-room-style lobby with lots of borrowable books and magazines (it takes a few minutes to figure out that the casual woman at the table surrounded by armchairs is the check-in person), plus a fancy coffee bar, a rooftop bar and a classy resto. The hotel’s immediate neighborhood is very quiet (lots of one-family clapboard homes) but nearby are some trendy restaurants and the subway (a 3-block walk).
