About our rating systemThis often-overlooked memorial commemorates the lives of the 499 citizens of Washington, D.C., who died in World War I. It’s worth a stop on your way to grander, more famous edifices. President Herbert Hoover dedicated the memorial in 1931; John Phillip Sousa conducted the Marine band at the event. The structure is a graceful design of 12 Doric columns supporting a classical circular dome. The names of the 499 dead are inscribed in the stone base.
