Getting There

By Car -- Coming from Denver, leave I-70 at exit 195 (Copper Mountain) and proceed south 24 miles on Colo. 91. From Grand Junction, depart I-70 at exit 171 (Minturn) and continue south 33 miles on U.S. 24. From Aspen, in the summer take Colo. 82 east 44 miles over Independence Pass (closed in winter), then turn north on U.S. 24 for 15 miles. There's also easy access from the south via U.S. 24.

By Plane -- The nearest airport with commercial service is the Eagle County Regional Airport, which offers car rentals and bus service to Leadville.

Visitor Information

Box 861), Leadville, CO 80461 (tel. 888/532-3845 or 719/486-3900; www.leadvilleusa.com), which operates a visitor center that's usually open daily from 9am to 4pm in summer, and 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Saturday the rest of the year.

Getting Around

U.S. 24 is Leadville's main street. Entering Leadville from the north, it's named Poplar Street; then it turns west on Ninth Street for a block and then south on Harrison Avenue. The next 7 blocks south, to Second Street, are the heart of this historic town. A block north, Seventh Street climbs east to the historic train depot and 13,186-foot Mosquito Pass, among America's highest, open to four-wheel-drive vehicles after the snow melts, usually sometime in July.
