Getting There
Driving to Pawleys Island from Charleston, just take U.S. 17 N. towards Myrtle Beach. There is no direct bus service, but Coast RTA bus #16 runs to Pawleys Island from Georgetown and Myrtle Beach via Murrells Inlet ($1.50 one-way) at least 5 times daily. Exploring Pawleys Island
Many visitors come to Pawleys Island just to shop for handicrafts, such as the famous Pawleys Island rope hammock. The best place to purchase one is the Original Hammock Shop (tel. 800/332-3490 or 843/237-9122), 10880 Ocean Hwy., in operation since 1938. It’s open year-round Monday to Saturday from 9:30am to 6pm and on Sunday from noon to 5pm. At various plantation stores in the area (known as the hammock shops), you’ll also find pewter, miniature doll furniture, clothing, candles, Christmas items, brass, and china. The only other real sight on the island is the Litchfield Plantation, a stately manor house (ca. 1740) at the end of a quarter-mile avenue of live oaks (24 Ave. of the Oak), making it oft-photographed (the house itself is closed to the public; the hotel closed in 2012). In the island’s Historic District you can view a number of signs with historic information about the antebellum homes here, though none are open to visitors (most are available for summer rental, though).
