Getting There

The Sheridan County Airport (tel. 307/674-4222; www.sheridancountyairport.com), just southwest of town on Airport Road (take exit 25 off I-90), has daily service from Denver on Great Lakes Airlines (tel. 800/554-5111; www.greatlakesav.com).

If you drive from Billings, take I-90 south 130 miles to Sheridan. From Sheridan you can continue south on I-90 then I-25, sliding along the eastern side of the Bighorn Mountains, 147 miles to Casper, or drive the full 325 miles to Cheyenne. From Yellowstone and Cody, follow U.S. 14 across the basin and over the Bighorns, and drop into Ranchester, where you'll take I-25 15 miles south to Sheridan.

Visitor Information

Across 5th Street is the Wyoming Game and Fish Visitors Center (tel. 307/672-7418), with information on wildlife habitats, fishing, hunting regulations, and the best places to spot wildlife.

Getting Around

You can rent a car from Avis (tel. 800/230-4898) or Budget (tel. 800/527-0700) at Sheridan's airport. In summer, there is a trolley that runs from the visitor center to downtown and other destinations; fare is $1. Or call Sheridan Taxi Service (tel. 307/674-6814).

Special Events

Held every Labor Day Weekend, Don King Days attracts about 1,500 people to the Big Horn Equestrian Center. Named for late, great local saddlemaker Don King, the event is a rodeo with few fences -- spectators get a great view of the action. Call Sheridan Travel and Tourism for additional information.
